Basically the archos 5 is some marketing teams attempt to get you to pay extra to use the hardware you purchased. You pay for a media player, so you would expect to it to play all the major formats. Unfortunately this is the exact expectation that is used to get you to buy it and then pay extra after the fact to allow your player to actually do all they imply it can do.
It plays MP3's, but not any of more recent formats unless you want to pay to unlock those capabilities.
So if you want to play m4a, m4b, mp4, aac, ogg files, you have to pay extra. The same situation is true with video as well.
The OS the run on this is linux, so you could install a linux distro instead, except that in doing so the ability play DRM locked files is lost and you lose any of the hardware specific drivers meant to allow this device to perform well.
On the plus side, the size is ok, and the amount of storage is nice, but that's about it really.
If you want a the fully featured device the marketing info claims this to be, be prepared to pay up to $100 above the listed price to unlock all the features that you were led to believe it already had.

I really wanted to like this device. I've had the archos 402, 504, 605, archos 5 and now the android. The best thing about any of these devices is the ability to record movies, shows etc right off your television or dvd player. It works well with windows media player and supports most media (with the additional plug-ins of course). All of archos devices however are faulty and they will eventually die on you. My archos 605 160gb died, and now my archos 5 250gb died. Customer support is o.k. however they replaced my 250gb archos 5 unit with a 160gb android so now I can no longer include my music library. The apps are useless. This is a portable audio/video player and nothing else. There is however nothing else out there with the ability to record right of of your television. I hope this unit will last but I wont be surprised if it doesn't. Be warned and see how the reviews are equally good and bad. A great product has predominately good reviews. This is not a great product, it's o.k.. It's a shame because it could really be great but archos continues to miss the target. I will never puchase another archos product, I mean it this time!

The Archos 5 is the smallest of the Archos media tablets (at 5" screen as opposed to the 7" and 9" tablets). As such, it fits nicely into a back pocket. Because of its size, however, using it for internet activity, where the keyboard is so small and I have large fingers, is a problem.
The major points for me are its touch screen use, internal speaker, and large memory (256Gb) make it useful for MP3 use. I do not use the Video, TV or Internet features, but they each would require additional expenditures for use.
This product is perfect for the use I intend for the device.

This was a very well thought out product and I purchased it because of the many functions and versatility. I only gave it 3 stars because the customer support is worse than none! I had problems with the fact that the only app that you could purchase would not install. I emailed the company for suggestions/instructions and never got a reply. I then called and was on hold for 27 minutes listening to 'how important your call is to us' but no one answered the call. I could not install flash which meant that with the wireless internet connection viewing music videos on line was difficult if not impossible. I was able to upload my music videos to it from my computer by converting the files, and the picture quality is great as is the viewing screen. The sound comes from only one side of the unit so the speaker gives poor quality sound. Using stereo headsets the sound is fine but I would have preferred speakers from both sides of the unit. Every function requires another product purchase accessory to use them which makes the unit cost close to the same amount to do all functions as the unit itself costs.
It's still a fun product to own, as long as you don't expect to do everything it claims to do. Having owned it now since last Christmas, I am enjoying the web radio instead of trying to view videos on line and watching my music videos or listening to mp3's. With 250 GB there is lots of storage space - enough to upload movies to watch too. If they were a user-friendly company with a decent customer support and sold apps for it (more than the one they have) this could have been the smaller version of the ipad before Apple invented it.

First issue, if you wanted to watch videos, you are required to buy two downloads for $19.99. I sensed a nickel and dime scheme about to happen. I was extremely disappointed with the content providers. CinemaNow charges twice the price for movies. I had several TV series on my Amazon Video Library and a couple of movies. I installed Amazon Unbox. After figuring out that you needed to change the USB connection to Microsoft Media Player, I was able to transfer movies and TV series. Several months later, I went to move more programs, but the Archos 5 wasn't recognized. I downloaded a new copy of Amazon Unbox, I tried just about anything to get it to work. The Amazon "supported devices" was a complete joke. The page listed two first generation Archos devices and Nokia Phones!?!?! There's a like that brings you over to Microsoft's defunct "Play With" program. I considered dumping my Archos for a newer version, but I haven't found a replacement I like,
